Instituto Español de Oceanografia (IEO)
The Spanish Oceanographic Institute was created following Royal Decree of 17 April 1914. It is a public research body devoted to research into marine sciences, especially in terms of the scientific knowledge of oceans, sustainability of fisheries resources and the marine environment. IEO depends on the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, directly reporting to the Secretariat of State for Research.
IEO not only carries out basic and applied research, it also provides scientific and technological advice to the administrations on matters relating to oceanography and marine sciences. In fact, according to the Maritime Fisheries Act of 2001, IEO is the government's research and advisory body in terms of sectoral fisheries policy. In addition, it is Spain's scientific and technological representative at most of the international forums and bodies related with the sea and its resources.

The Institute operates under the aegis of the Cyprus Research and Educational Foundation (CREF), which is governed by a Board of Trustees, comprised of leading personalities of the international academic, political and business world. The Cyprus Institute
The creation of The Cyprus Institute (CyI), a novel, internationally recognized research institution, is the tangible manifestation of the Cyprus Research and Educational Foundation’s vision to help transform Cyprus into a knowledge-based economy, and in doing so to advance the welfare of the island and the region. Today, the Institute is a world-class research and technology institution, carrying out pioneering research programs involving cutting-edge high throughput technologies, in order to address problems of regional as well as international significance. At the same time, it provides training for future researchers and scholars through its high quality doctoral programs. more

Enalia Physis
Enalia Physis Environmental Research Centre is a Cyprus-based non-profit organization established in 2009. Enalia Physis conducts and promotes environmental research in marine and terrestrial ecosystems.
The members of Enalia Physis are experts in biological/environmental research and management, covering a wide range of fields, such as conservation of terrestrial and marine ecosystems, marine and freshwater biology, fisheries, avian ecology and environmental education. Enalia Physis aspires to become a strong environmental platform for research and to be able to influence decisions about the environment in a positive and constructive manner, utilizing its connections with an international network of collaborators.
The need for an environmental NGO with an understanding of the nature of terrestrial and marine ecosystems, and the interactions between them, is particularly important for an island such as Cyprus where Enalia Physis is based. Enalia Physis aspires to become a strong contender in environmental issues in the eastern Mediterranean and beyond. The threats of further climate change, habitat destruction and desertification, water shortages, overfishing and sea level rising, combined with the growing importance of deep sea hydrocarbon exploration and extraction, make the eastern Mediterranean a hotspot for research.
Increasing public awareness and environmental education are also priorities for scientists at Enalia Physis. Awareness campaigns are constantly planned and executed, as are also collaborations with other NGOs and research institutes, so as to increase the impact of research on policy-making processes.

Mediterranean Institute of marine and terrestrial Biodiversity and Ecology
IMBE studies biological systems on land and in the ocean, with a particular interest in biodiversity and the functioning of ecosystems. The main goal is to improve conservation as well as the management of natural resources in the light of global change. IMBE’s more than 200 environmental scientists cover key areas of biodiversity, evolution, ecology, paleoecology and the human-environment relation (global ecology).
Researchers use and develop approaches in basic and applied biology, including model development.
